Hawthorn Half Day Race

You donated. We listened. And we found the perfect place for it.

As part of our 20th anniversary Hawthorn Half Day Relay & Ultra, our participants generously donated $285 to give back to our community.

We’re excited to share that those dollars will support New Shoe Day, an Indiana organization working to end shoe insecurity and help kids show up ready to move, play and participate with confidence.

This one feels especially fitting for the Hawthorn community. We know what a good pair of shoes can mean when it’s time to toe the line.

And there’s another running connection: on September 12, I’ll be competing at Prairie On Fire Backyard Ultra, a last-person-standing event that is partnering with New Shoe Day through its Every Yard Is a Gift fundraiser. Our $285 Hawthorn donation will be made through that effort.

Thank you to every Hawthorn participant who donated in 2026. This is your gift. You helped turn our 20th anniversary celebration into an opportunity to help a child take their own next step.

The 20th Anniversary of the Hawthorn Half Day Relay & Ultra is almost here, and we're looking for volunteers to help with the magic of race day on Saturday, May 23 at Hawthorn Park in Terre Haute.

All volunteers will receive a free race shirt, commemorative 20th anniversary hat, a complimentary meal during either the 6-hour or 12-hour post-race meal service, and 50% off registration for next year’s event.

Shifts are flexible, and you do not need prior experience to volunteer.

We’re officially in the final stretch before the 20th anniversary of the Hawthorn Half Day Relay & Ultra — and this Friday, May 15 is the final day to guarantee your race shirt.

After Friday, shirts will be first come, first served and cannot be guaranteed.

Whether you’re planning to run solo, join a relay team, walk laps with friends, or simply see what you’re capable of over 6 or 12 hours, there’s still time to be part of this year’s event.

Here’s what’s waiting for you at Hawthorn:

• 6-hour and 12-hour events
• Solo and relay divisions
• A scenic 5K loop course at Hawthorn Park
• A full-service aid station
• Historic overall eagle trophies and age group awards
• A special 20th anniversary finisher medal
• Free samples and giveaways from sponsors including LMNT and Salty Britches
• Live timing and scoring updates throughout the day
• Loaded baked potato bar and pie during awards ceremonies
• Runner’s Village next to the start/finish line for crews, tents, and all-day race atmosphere
• Camping available within Hawthorn Park campgrounds, including some locations along the course

And somewhere between lap 1 and lap 20, this race tends to become something more than just miles.

One of the best things about Hawthorn is that you do not have to be an ultrarunner to belong here. Some people are racing competitively. Some are walking. Some are chasing huge mileage goals. Others are simply trying something new with friends.

That’s the magic of timed races.
