Friends of Rea Park, Inc.

Friends of Rea Park, Inc. This is the home of Friends of Rea Park, Inc. We are a group dedicated to restoring Rea Park in Terre Haute, IN primarily through advocacy & fundraising.

During the summer of 2013, Mike Harding, a former resident and employee of Rea Park, returned to Terre Haute, IN only to see that Rea Park's historic clubhouse had fallen into disrepair. Mike had served as an assistant superintendent of schools during his career as an Indiana public school administrator, and was aware grants may be available to help the park. He contacted two individuals to see if

they could assist in obtaining funds from various sources for rehabilitating the clubhouse. These two individuals were Scott Williams of the Wabash Valley Community Foundation and Tommy Kleckner of Indiana Landmarks. Over the course of the next several months, these three individuals met with Eddie Bird, superintendent of parks for Terre Haute. In November of 2013, the four agreed to develop a presentation that would be given to the Terre Haute Parks Board at their March, 2014 meeting. This presentation would emphasize the need to restore Rea Park's historic clubhouse, and eventually, renew the entire park. On March 17, 2014, the group met with members of the Terre Haute Parks Board to present their ideas. From this meeting, the parks board gave approval for a new group to work with Superintendent Bird and the Parks Board. Friends of Rea Park, a group modeled off a friends group in Evansville, IN that wanted to save Bosse Field, would now be able to help the city further develop Rea Park. Indiana State Parks Foundation friends group guidelines were looked to as an example of how to organize and manage a friends group for Rea Park. The group continues to work with the TH Parks Board and Department today.

REHABILITATING THE HISTORIC REA PARK CLUBHOUSE ...
-
Friends of Rea Park, Inc. is working with City of Terre Haute officials and Sanders & Associates (Architects) to develop plans to return the historic clubhouse to proper operating specifications.
-
New construction would transform the historic building into a full-service social center for all sporting activities conducted at the park. Major objectives for the clubhouse's renewal include:
-
1. Renew the exterior of the building.
2. Replace electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning systems.
3. Construct a new terrace on the west side of the building for outdoor seating and performances.
4. On the east side of the building, add on an elevated patio the same size as the main hall to accommodate outdoor activity (dining/overlooking the 9th and 18th greens).
5. Add men's and women's bathrooms to the main hall floor.
6. Renovate the pro shop area.
7. Add a new bar/kitchen area to the south wing.
8. Make the clubhouse handicap accessible.
-
The drawings below provide a visual of the renewed Rea Park clubhouse/social center upon completion.

MASTER PLAN FOR THE GROUNDS AT HISTORIC REA PARK ...
-
The City of Terre Haute, the TH Parks Department and Friends of Rea Park, Inc. have worked with Dan Sanders and Associates (Architects) to develop a master plan for the grounds at Rea Park. This document describes amenities that are proposed to be developed on park grounds in coming years. These include:
-
1. Walking/running path around the park
2. Playground/shelter/splash pad "park within a park" area
3. New golf academy building and updated golf range
4. Relocated Tennis/pickle ball courts toward the southwest corner of the park
5. Rehabilitated clubhouse into a social center for the park
-
This map shows how the 45 or so acres that run along S. 7th Street might be developed for future recreational use. By adding these amenities, the park will no longer be regarded as just a golf course. It will become a full-service park, emphasizing life-long sports focusing on health and wellness for those of all ages.

REA PARK'S 100TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION - IT'S ABOUT OUR HEALTH AND WELLNESS!
-
Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate the 100th birthday of William S. Rea Park Tuesday. We are working with city officials to renew this historic venue. Rea Park is not just a golf course ... it is a park! We want to see the property used to help our fellow citizens improve their health, and ultimately, their employability. In our view, the Rea Park project is actually an economic and community improvement project for Vigo County!
