Congratulations to Vice President Langston Tillman for becoming a USCF expert by achieving a 2000+ rating at our June ASU Open!
Langston is a sophomore studying Chemical Engineering and Mathematics in Barrett, the Honors College. We asked him a few questions to help get to know him! You can read the interview below.
----------------------------------------------------
Q: How did you first get involved in chess?
A: I grew up in Taiwan and moved to the US when I was 14, just before the start of high school. I didn't really know anyone, so a teacher suggested I join a club that he sponsored - chess club. I went with my high school to a tournament once and fell in love with the game. I started studying it outside of the club, and slowly I got better and better.
Q: Off the chess board, what do you like to do?
A: In addition to studying chemistry and math, I work in a chemistry lab. My less academic interests include badminton, which I'm not bad at, walking/ hiking, and cooking, which I'm absolutely terrible at.
Q: Who is your favorite chess player?
A: My favorite chess player is Maxine Vachier-Lagrave (MVL). When I first got into chess I watched a video on the first round of the Sinquefield Cup in 2014, where MVL played an extremely risky line against Carlsen. MVL struck me as a brilliantly daring chess player who does not hesitate to be aggressive when he needs to. I've liked him ever since, and right now he's the highest rated blitz player in the world!
