San Diego Surfers Women's Rugby Club

The San Diego Surfers Women’s Rugby Club is the only women’s club in San Diego county. Founded in 1975 (and previously known as both OMBUSH and the Rio Grande Surfers), in 1997 the team applied for non-profit status and officially changed our name to the San Diego Surfers Women’s Rugby Club. Since then, the Surfers have rapidly matured as a club in terms of talent and experience thanks to the dedi

cation of our players, coaches, and supporters. In 2007 and 2008, the Surfers won two consecutive SCRFU Championships and earned our first set of trips to the USA Rugby National Tournament. In fall of 2009, USA Rugby changed the women’s club competitive structure, and the SCRFU Division 1 women’s league became part of Competitive Region 1 (West). Subsequently, in both 2009 and 2010, the San Diego Surfers finished first in CR1 and earned two trips to nationals, where we finished 1st in the nation two years in a row! In 2010 the Surfers were invited by USA Rugby to join the Women’s Premier League, a national league featuring the top eight women’s club teams in the United States. The Surfers accepted the invitation and, when a challenge match was declined, became the first Division I team to move into WPL since the league’s inception in 2009. In addition to our fifteens team, the Surfers also have a growing sevens program. In the summer of 2009, the Surfers sent a sevens team to the inaugural women’s National Invitational Sevens Championships in San Francisco, where we finished 3rd. In the summer of 2010 the Surfers put in another impressive sevens performance, finishing 2nd in the nation. The addition to our league play, the Surfers are also known for our Champagne Classic tournament. Now entering its 29th year, the spring tournament has served as a showcase for club and college-level teams from the U.S. and abroad who travel to San Diego to play great rugby in America’s Finest City. The Surfers are a team of friends and competitive athletes from all walks of life and all levels of rugby experience. We are passionate about the game of rugby and enthusiastic about supporting the rugby community in San Diego and as a whole.
