BUILDING ENDURANCE & BASE TRAINING IS NOT JUST SLOW RUNNING/L*D.

The base period should be used to develop a foundation for all of your training. Unless you’re coming straight from the couch, there’s never really a time when you’re only running slow or only doing speed. Doing only L*D for a long period is archaic and even in the days of Lydiard’s 100 mile weeks before hard workouts, which are misunderstood by many, included steady state, running by feel, fartleks & hilly runs. It was not only easy training like many believe.

* Endurance is the goal:
* Focus on building mileage
* Weekly long run. Build to max distance.
* Mostly aerobic running

* General speed, not just slow easy running: These efforts are not hard, build leg speed, prepare the body for faster work and are great for running form & economy.
* Strides after runs. Can be done from 5k - mi pace. Basic example: 6 mi easy + 6 x 15 sec strides @ mi pace
* Hill sprints for strength + easy run
* Speed endurance. Basic Example: 3 mi easy + 8 x 200 down to mi pace + 2 mi easy
* Tempo, fartlek, surges & steady state. Helps with ability to hold faster paces for longer.
