How Do You Keep Your Weight Down on Vacation and Still Enjoy Yourself?
Vacation used to feel like an all or nothing situation, either you’re “on track” or completely off the rails. But the truth is, it doesn’t have to be that way.
This trip threw me an extra curveball. About a week before leaving, my back decided not to cooperate. What started as pretty severe back pain has now shifted into tight, painful hamstrings. Not exactly the ideal way to head into a trip where gyms are basically nonexistent. But instead of scrapping everything, I’ve adjusted and honestly, that’s the whole point.
Here’s what I’m focusing on:
I’m prioritizing protein. No matter where we are or what the meals look like, I’m making sure I’m getting enough. It keeps me full, helps maintain muscle, and gives me a solid foundation even when everything else is a little more relaxed.
I’m enjoying the local food because that’s part of the experience. I’m just not overindulging at every opportunity. It’s about choosing what’s actually worth it and being present with it, instead of eating everything just because it’s there.
And movement? It looks different right now and that’s okay. No structured workouts, no gym sessions. But I’m still hitting around 10,000-20,000 steps a day just exploring, walking, and staying active in a way that fits the environment (and my current limitations).
The biggest shift is this: I’m focusing on what I can control.
I can’t control that my back flared up. I can’t control the lack of gym access. But I can control how I fuel my body, how much I move, and how I respond.
Vacation doesn’t have to derail your progress. It can actually reinforce it if you stay flexible, realistic, and consistent in the ways that matter most.
Do what you can. Focus on what you can control. And don’t forget to actually enjoy the vacation.
