A martial artist can punch significantly faster than an average person. While an average person's punch speed is typically between 3-7 m/s (6.7-15.6 mph), professional martial artists and boxers can reach speeds of up to 20 m/s (45 mph) or even faster.
Here's a more detailed breakdown:
Average Person:
An average person's punch speed is generally between 3 to 7 meters per second (m/s).
Professional Athletes:
Professional athletes, including boxers and martial artists, can reach speeds of 20 m/s (45 mph) or higher.
Example:
Ricky Hatton, a professional boxer, clocked a maximum punch speed of 32 mph.
Factors Influencing Punch Speed:
Training and Experience:
Martial artists and boxers undergo rigorous training that develops their speed, strength, and technique, allowing them to generate faster and more powerful punches.
Technique:
Proper punching technique, including the transfer of weight and the use of leverage, significantly impacts punch speed.
Body Mechanics:
A martial artist's body mechanics, including the way they brace and rotate their torso, contribute to a faster punch.
Muscle Strength:
While speed is important, strength also plays a role in punch power. Strong muscles allow for more force behind the punch, which can also translate to faster speed.
In summary, a martial artist's punch speed can be 2-3 times faster than that of an average person, with professional athletes pushing the limits even further.
The typical time it takes for a person to respond to a visual signal with their hands (for example pressing a button upon seeing a green light) is around 0.28 s[note]Journal of the American Optometric Association, 2000, vol.

67th Birthday today!
Hung Ga Crane
Pardon the background noise. in my birthday video that was Sue working in the kitchen. I start every morning with a pretty vigorous workout. Especially on my birthday! Today I was working on my traditional Kung Fu which provides me much of my exercise. As I used these soft flowing techniques I thought about the power in them and knew most people didn't understand what some of these traditional moves are and how they are used, not to mention how powerful and destructive that they can be. I had never broken a board using that technique (the White Crane's Beak, a technique usually reserved for the eyes or soft tissue) and wondered if I could generate enough power to break the one-inch pine piece, a board like that is comparable to the force needed to break a collarbone or rib. I tried unsuccessfully once earlier that morning. My thumb tip actually took most of the force. I am not a big breaker but felt it would be thought provoking to see one of Kung Fu's softer techniques in action.
