Good morning fellow black powder enthusiasts,

Thank you to all who braved the possible bad weather for our August match. Mother Nature held off for us to have a pleasant morning for the match. The skies were overcast however; the temperatures were surprisingly mild for early August. While the turnout was light by our normal attendance figures, I believe we had a good match.

Attached please find the scores for the match as well as the August monthly report.

Thank you all for your continued good sportsmanship and participation.

Good afternoon fellow Skunk Skinners,

I apologize for the delay in sending out the scores for this month's match. Computer issues (aka the nut behind the keyboard).

Thank you to all who braved the heat and humidity for the July match. We had a strong turnout considering the celebrations of our Great Republic's 205th birthday. We also had some great competition and high scores.

Attached are the Scores and the Monthly Report.

Until next time, be safe and enjoy the shooting sports.

Doug

🎯 Some Western legends shrink when you check the facts. This one mostly holds up. At the Second Battle of Adobe Walls in June 1874, a buffalo hunter named Billy Dixon is said to have knocked a man off his horse at a distance so great that people have argued about it for nearly 150 years.

A tiny settlement of buffalo hunters and merchants was camped at Adobe Walls in the Texas Panhandle when a large force of Comanche, Kiowa and Cheyenne warriors attacked at dawn, led in part by the young war leader Quanah Parker. The roughly two dozen defenders forted up behind thick adobe walls and held off wave after wave with their powerful long range buffalo rifles. The attackers, expecting an easy raid, could not break through and eventually pulled back to the surrounding hills.

Days into the standoff, Dixon reportedly took aim at a group of warriors on a distant bluff and brought one down with a single shot from his Sharps rifle. Surveyors later measured the distance at roughly 1,538 yards, nearly nine tenths of a mile. 💥 Dixon himself modestly called it a lucky shot, and it probably was, but it became one of the most famous marksmanship feats of the entire frontier. Do you think a shot like that was skill, luck, or a little of both?

Good afternoon fellow Skunk Skinners,

Attached please find the scores and monthly report for our June match. It was a great for the match and we had a large turnout. A great match with almost perfect weather.

Thank you all for your continued enthusiasm and sportsmanship. As always, the Skunk Skinners set the standard for an enjoyable competition. Welcome to our three new shooters (two guests, Sean Jenness and Clem Bronkowski) and a new shooter from the Club, Robert Benson. Each of our new shooters placed in their respective disciplines. Come join us anytime.

Our Sgt. York Top Skinner for the match was Mark Mercer. It was a very close contest with the thinnest of margins determining the winner. Terrance Hughes' shot, by the thinnest of margins, was not scored due to touching the black portion of the target. Better luck next time Terrance.

Until next time, enjoy the shooting sports and have fun.

Reminder: Our quarterly, members only, swap meet will be held next Sunday the 14th.

Thank you,

Doug
