Can a business generate strong revenue and still lose money?

In this quick business lesson, I use two fictional service businesses to explain a profit and loss statement and show how revenue, cost of goods sold, overhead, and net profit affect business health.

The key lesson: revenue shows how much money entered the business, while net profit shows how much remained after expenses.

Do you know your business’s net profit and/or only its revenue?

Business coaching should do more than give you a list of steps.

During our coaching sessions, we help you understand what matters most, think through your business decisions, and identify the next step forward.

We don't leave you with advice and expect you to figure it out alone.

We work through the process with you in each session, helping you turn information into clear, practical action for your business.

When I help a business get unstuck, I don’t start with goals or plans.

I start by identifying the growth roadblock.

Because a business can only move forward as fast as its slowest point.

I’ve put together a simple one-page tool called The Roadblock Focuser to help you do exactly that.

Here’s how it works:
You mark each area of your business Red / Yellow / Green

🔴 Red = roadblock
🟡 Yellow = unstable
🟢 Green = on track

The first red you encounter is your focus clue.

If multiple areas are red, start with the first one you come to.

You don’t need to fix everything.

You just need to identify the first roadblock.

Have you ever stopped to ask yourself...

If you couldn't work tomorrow because of an unexpected illness or injury, what would happen to your business? What would happen to your family?

This isn't something any of us like to think about. I know I didn't until my husband was injured. That experience made me think differently about how quickly things can change and how important it is to have a plan in place.

Would your bills still get paid?

Would your clients still be taken care of?

Would your family have enough income while you recovered?

These are questions most business owners don't ask until they're forced to.

Having a plan in place isn't about expecting the worst. It's about protecting everything you've worked so hard to build and the people who depend on you.

Have you thought about what your backup plan would be if you couldn't work for 30 days?

If you own a business and feel like everything depends on you, this is for you.

I didn't learn this lesson while running my own business. I learned it years earlier when I was in a corporate leadership role.

At the time, I thought I had to be involved in everything. Then I realized the more I held onto, the less time I had to focus on the bigger picture.

Over the years, I've seen this pattern again and again. Many business owners care so much about their business that they end up trying to do everything themselves. Before long, they become the bottleneck.

What would you do with your time if your business didn't depend on you for every little thing?

If you own a small business, this one's for you.

For a long time, I thought I had to do it all. The truth is, I was holding myself back.

Once I learned to let go and lead differently, I had more time, could focus on bigger opportunities, and kept growing in my career.

I see so many business owners doing exactly what I used to do, and it doesn't have to be that way.

What's been the hardest thing for you to hand off?

If you own a business and feel like everything depends on you, this is for you.

One question from an employee completely changed the way I led.

She looked at me and asked, "Why won't you let me take some of this off your plate?"

That was when I realized.

Sometimes we believe we're protecting the business by holding onto everything. But in reality, we may be holding our team back from stepping up and taking ownership.

At the time, I was in a corporate leadership role, and that conversation changed everything for me.

I stopped believing I had to do it all and started learning how to lead in a different way.

As I made that shift, it freed up my time and allowed me to focus on bigger opportunities instead of getting buried in the day-to-day. It also opened doors for me to continue growing as a leader throughout my career.

Today, I teach business owners the same lesson. When you stop trying to do everything yourself and start developing your team, you create the time and space to focus on growing your business instead of just keeping it running.

What's one responsibility you've been hesitant to hand off?

If you're ready to stop carrying your business on your shoulders and start building a team that shares the responsibility, book your complimentary Business Freedom Strategy Session through the link on our website.

If you own a business and end most days exhausted but still feel like you didn't move your business forward, this is for you.

Many business owners spend so much time responding to what's urgent that they never have the space to focus on what's important.

The turning point isn't working harder. It's recognizing that constant firefighting is a symptom. It isn't the job of a leader.

When you create the time and mental space to think strategically, you make better decisions, develop stronger teams, and position your business for growth.

Here's one question to think about:

When was the last time you had uninterrupted time to work on your business instead of in it?

I'd love to hear your thoughts. What's the biggest distraction or "fire" that's keeping you from focusing on growing your business?

One of the most rewarding parts of my work is watching business owners grow into confident leaders.

This review from Bill really captures what business coaching is about. It isn't about handing out answers. It's about asking the right questions, helping business owners think through complex decisions, strengthen leadership skills, and grow their businesses with confidence and clarity.

One line especially stood out to me:

"She asked the right questions instead of just handing me an answer, and I ended up with a solution I actually believed in."

That's exactly the goal.

Every business has moments when the next step isn't obvious. Whether it's hiring, improving operations, or making leadership decisions, my role as a business coach is to help clients find the answers that are right for their business, not simply provide quick solutions.

Thank you, Bill, for your trust. It's been a privilege to be part of your journey and to see ProfitPro Bookkeeping continue to grow. Congratulations on everything you've accomplished. I can't wait to see what's next.

If you’re a business owner navigating decisions that don’t have obvious answers, I’d be glad to talk.

Breaking News 🚨 The numbers know before you do.

Every business leaves clues.

Long before revenue slows...
Long before cash gets tight...
Long before you're feeling overwhelmed...

The numbers have already started telling the story.

The problem isn't that business owners don't care about their numbers.

The problem is they don't know what they're looking at.

They watch revenue.
They check the bank balance.
They hope next month will be better.

Meanwhile, the business is quietly signaling:

• Margins are shrinking.
• Capacity is maxed out.
• Payroll is becoming harder to support.
• One client represents too much risk.
• Growth is creating complexity instead of freedom.

The numbers aren't there to judge you.

They're there to help you make better decisions before small problems become expensive ones.

That's why I start with financial clarity.

Not because numbers matter more than people.

Because they reveal what's actually happening, so you can lead your business with confidence instead of assumptions.

What is your business trying to tell you today?
