Coal is essentially fossilized sunlight. The coal we burn today took millions of years to form, starting long before dinosaurs even walked the Earth.
Most of our coal comes from the Carboniferous Period (about 300 to 360 million years ago), when the planet was covered in vast, steamy swamps.
Here is a breakdown of how a pile of dead plants transforms into a combustible rock.
The 4 Stages of Coal Formation
The transformation relies on three main ingredients: time, heat, and pressure. As layers of sediment build up over millenniums, the organic material goes through four distinct stages.
1. Peat (The Raw Material)
It all starts in gigantic wetlands. Massive prehistoric trees, ferns, and mosses lived, died, and fell into the swamp water. Because the water was highly acidic and low in oxygen, the dead plants didn't rot completely. Instead, they partially decomposed into a soggy, spongy, brown mass called peat.
Fun fact: Peat can actually be dried and burned for fuel today, but it produces a lot of smoke and very little heat compared to actual coal.
2. Lignite (Brown Coal)
Over millions of years, seas and rivers deposited layers of sand, clay, and dirt over the peat. This heavy sediment squeezed out most of the water. The combination of weight (pressure) and the Earth's natural internal heat baked the peat, turning it into lignite. This is the lowest rank of true coal—it’s crumbly, brown, and has a high moisture content.
3. Bituminous (Soft Coal)
This is the coal mined throughout Southwestern Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia! As more and more layers of sediment piled on top, the heat and pressure intensified. This process squeezed out almost all remaining moisture and packed the carbon atoms tighter together. Lignite transformed into sub-bituminous and then bituminous coal. This is a dense, black, shiny rock and is the most common type of coal used today for generating electricity.
4. Anthracite (Hard Coal)
If the coal is subjected to extreme geological pressure and heat—often during the formation of mountain ranges—it reaches the final stage: anthracite. This is a highly specialized, very hard, jet-black coal. It has the highest carbon content (around 86% to 97%) and burns the cleanest and hottest of all the ranks, though it is much rarer and harder to mine.
It makes up only about 1% of the world's total coal reserves because it requires very specific, intense geological folding—usually caused by mountain building—to form.
Because it takes hundreds of millions of years to create, coal is a finite, non-renewable resource—once we burn through the reserves made during those ancient swamp eras, it’s gone for good. Based on current consumption rates and known reserves, the math points to about 125 years left, but the real-world answer is a bit more complicated.
