This week our students are working on their INTENSITY. I asked my students what they thought intensity meant, and they said they thought intensity can be shown through your power, energy, and fierceness. They were spot on.

This week I want to see my students show their intensity and fierceness with their eyes.

We had some dueling dragons at our Scrimmage this month. Let's keep that intensity and keep pushing. #화이팅

This week's philosophy of the week is more of a reflection on COMPETITION. What is competition? Why is competition important? When we compete, what is the best way to win and lose? How do we treat our competitors? What mindset should we be in as we compete?

At U.S. Tae Kwon Do, we like to prepare for competition with an attitude of FOCUS, FUN, and WIN!

When you enter a competition, you should be calm and FOCUSED without distractions of any kind. Remembering to be focused on your actions and to not let your emotions dictate your performance.

Have FUN! As fun is not the primary goal, if you find that you are competing and not having fun, you may be competing for the wrong reasons. Fun also is a great motivator and makes winning or losing much more enjoyable before, during, and after the competition.

Win or lose, the objective of most competitions is to WIN. If you forget to try and win and make a strong effort to win, you may not improve, making the time you put into the competition less valuable. Make winning part of your priority as long as the other points of staying focused and having fun are kept in mind.

One last thing that should be mentioned that has to be included is RESPECT. Respect for yourself, your competitors, your teammates, and the competition is essential. If you lose respect, then you will become unqualified to participate in competition.

We hope that all of our students strive to compete with all of this in mind. This will ensure that competition is a great source of motivation and a way to improve themselves physically and mentally as athletes.

CONCENTRATION is the philosophy of the week. Put all of your concentration into what you are doing in that moment. When you dedicate time to doing something, make sure to concentrate on that task. Don't be distracted by your phone, your friends, your parents, or anything else that might hinder your performance. This will result in better progress over time in skills that you are trying to develop.

This upcoming Friday we will host a belt promotion test. All students testing will need to show their CONFIDENCE! The attitude of believing in yourself. That doesn't mean you can't be scared or nervous, it means regardless of whether you are scared or nervous, you believe you can do it. We can't wait to see all of our students show their confidence off this Friday. YOU CAN DO IT!

It's a bittersweet moment when some of your students leave for university. It is sad that we won't be able to spend time in the dojang together, but it is a proud moment to see how much they have grown and developed. It has been an amazing journey watching andrew grow and mature into an amazing martial artist and human being. Andrew has trained with U.S. Tae Kwon Do for 13 years and it won't feel the same when he's not around. We know that he will continue to make us proud at Washington and Lee University.

This week's philosophy focus is on "SPORTSMANSHIP!" Unfortunately, I believe that we don't see enough sportsmanship in today's most popular sports. If you are learning a sport and you have not learned sportsmanship, then you shouldn't play the game. If you haven't learned sportsmanship, then you have missed the true purpose of what the sport was all about in the first place.

Luckily, sportsmanship is a huge part of Taekwondo and it is built into the sport itself. That does not mean that some taekwondo athletes don't forget about what sportsmanship means. So we need to remember what it means and make sure to practice it in our dojangs, gyms, tournaments, and any other sport that we may play in. Because that is what it means to be a taekwondo athlete.
