Spent the weekend at Homestead Training Center taking my second Red Dot Sight instructor course from the nationally renowned Scott Jedlinski.

The course cost me over $1000 in fees, ammo and gas. It was mentally & physically demanding. I had some fun. Much was learned which I will happily share with my clients. I’ve taken several dozen courses like this and make it a habit to take at least one a year but better one per quarter.

My point is three fold.

The learning never stops, find instructors that keep learning and finally you get what you pay for in an instructor.

Tragic.

Just learned a mutual friend had her son murdered last night. Shot twice in the stomach while selling game controllers. Bled out during surgery. 18 years old. Just graduated HS.

This isn’t something I think parents ever recover from.

When selling online, meet in the police station parking lot. Don’t go alone.

So sad.

Controversial but absolute truth.

Military and law enforcement experience does not make one "good with guns".

After 12 years as an Infantry officer, I had qualified expert in just about every weapon from the .45/M9 to the M240. I thought I was pretty good.

I had the opportunity to shoot with a member of the Army Marksmanship Unit who was also a former member of Delta. Long story short, I didn't know what good was because I had never seen it. He did things with that gun that if I had not been present would have to be considered magic.

The take away is don't assume your skills are greater than they are if you have never been exposed to real shooting. An easy way is to attend a local USPSA match. I'll go with you. Also be very leery of that advice you got from ______ who was a Soldier, Marine or Cop. Compare it to some other sources with different backgrounds.

There are some very competent shooters from those professions. They tended to routinely exceed the organization's standards, shoot A LOT and not just what the job made them do (e.g. 1000+ rounds a year, easy) .

Hope this starts a reasoned discussion.

When it comes to handling fi****ms, it's often assumed that the military and police are the best. But most only perform training annually.

This is a very good synopsis of the vulnerabilities of MMA fighting in a street fight.

The only one they missed is going to the ground allows your adversary’s friends the opportunity to kill you while engaged and tied up with another.

Not surprised this has gotten zero traction in the media.

Excellent outcome. Did you know that well over 90% of the time a law abiding armed citizen chooses to confront an active shooter that the result is a positive outcome?

These citizens have largely been doing the “right” things. Have you considered what to do?

I'm a big fan of the police. I have a couple of friends in uniform. calling the police isn't a plan when someone is in the act of killing you and yours.

Take charge of your defense. ID, avoid but have a what next.
