The Foundation — Never Forget Where You Came From
Before the standard was expected… it had to be set.
The 1971 Marian Colts, led by Head Coach Joe Leonzi, did exactly that.
Coming off a season with 15 returning veterans, expectations were high—and this group embraced them. “Optimism has never been so high surrounding the football program,” quoted Leonzi. Their mantra, “Operation Hardnose,” wasn’t just a slogan—it defined how they played the game.
The Colts opened the season with a “shocking” 34-14 victory over West Hazleton, marking the program’s first 1-0 start in nine seasons and setting the tone for what would become a historic year.
Finishing with a record of 8-2, the 1971 Colts etched their names into the record books. At the time, they set the mark for most wins in a single season, broke both the season and single-game scoring records—including a 60-point performance against Weatherly—and claimed the prestigious P&B Trophy, awarded to the top team in the Panther Valley region.
Individual excellence followed team success. Running back Gary Grant, who became the program’s all-time leading scorer at the time with 128 points, earned All-Star honors on offense. On the other side of the ball, Thad Kosciolek was recognized for his standout play with Defensive All-Star honors.
They didn’t just meet expectations…
They redefined them.
This was toughness.
This was ex*****on.
This was The Foundation.
