It all started with a vision in order to help inner city youth as they progress to a brighter future; making them aware of the endless possibilities that there are for individuals with an love and interests for the sport of wrestling as well as pursuing a degree of Higher Learning. The Florida A&M University Wrestling Team was started 18 years ago and has been competing in the NCWA and other divis

on like NCAA and NAIA teams in the southeast. It was the insight of one man with a dream who shared his intentions with five students all striving to help others while bettering themselves in the process. The thought was to enlighten peers with the same dreams and fields of profession while aiding and mentoring children. While helping others in the community, there will also be an account set up to aide in the financial support of its active members who deserve with an eligible GPA and/or hardship cases. All students especially those showing excellence in their abilities to learn and perform in the competitive world of collegiate wrestling while giving a helping hand to the community, will be offered membership into the FAMU Wrestling Team. On the mat, the Rattlers have grown into a force within the highly competitive Southeast Conference of the NCWA. The Rattlers have in recent years crown a NCWA National Champion 2017 Rickey Carter 285 lb weight class.

This summer, Iana Bridges completed two distinct internships in Tallahassee: one with the State University System of Florida and another with Thomas & Thomas Law. At the State University System, she analyzed higher education policy and administrative operations, while at Thomas & Thomas Law, she gained practical legal experience conducting legal research, analyzing case files, and assisting with litigation support. Iana rates both experiences 5 out of 5 stars for the invaluable mentorship, exposure to state-level policy, and hands-on legal training gained.

🚨 BEYOND THE MAT | Summer Internship Spotlight 🐍🤼

Success starts with building a strong foundation—on the mat and in your career.

This summer, our 2X NCWA All American Aniyea Dickerson completed a Surveying Internship with Olsson in Kansas, where she gained hands-on experience supporting a variety of engineering and construction projects.

Aniyea rated her experience ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ while developing valuable skills in:
📍 Conducting topographic surveys using GPS equipment and data collectors
📐 Collecting accurate field data and setting survey control
🚧 Identifying utilities and right-of-way boundaries
🏗️ Supporting projects involving assisted living facilities, gas stations, water treatment plants, and other commercial developments

Through this experience, Aniyea was able to see firsthand how surveying provides the foundation for successful engineering and construction projects.

She enjoyed her experience so much that she hopes to continue working with Olsson in the future!

🚨 BEYOND THE MAT | Summer Research Spotlight 🐍🤼

Champions don’t just compete—they innovate.

This summer, Samantha Sherman 2024 NCWA All American and current club president conducted undergraduate research under Dr. Bernadin at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering as part of the Neural Robotic Hand Project.

Samantha rated her experience ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ while gaining hands-on research experience developing and testing brain-computer interface (BCI) technology. Her work included:
🧠 Analyzing EEG brain signals
🤖 Programming microcontrollers
💻 Integrating hardware and software to control a robotic hand through neural input

Beyond the technical skills, Samantha credits the experience for the outstanding mentorship, research opportunities, and confidence she gained throughout the summer.

Champions aren’t built only in the wrestling room.

This summer, Kyle Ford stepped into the construction industry as a Project Manager Intern with Miller Electric Company, where he earned a ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ experience while developing skills that will last far beyond graduation.

During his internship, Kyle:
✅ Earned his OSHA 30 Certification
✅ Strengthened his leadership skills
✅ Gained experience with Microsoft Excel
✅ Learned Bluebeam and project management fundamentals

At FAMU Wrestling, we’re committed to preparing our student-athletes for success in every arena—on the mat, in the classroom, and in their careers.
