Register Now for the Irene Perry Invitational & the JLB Championship Golf Tournaments
The first woman golfer at the City’s historic Jake Gaither Golf Course, Irene Perry, and the golfer whose score of 59 in 1984 still stands as the course record, Johnnie Lee Brown, will be remembered this month at golf tournaments being held one week apart.
There’s still time to register for the Irene Perry Invitational Golf Tournament, presented by the Capital City Garden Club Inc., taking place this Thursday, Sept. 18. Jake Gaither Golf Course proudly hosts this event, now in its third year and named for a wonderful woman. Perry was a teacher and longtime member of the garden club. As founder and first president of the JGGC Women's League, she was one of the course’s “Legends of the Links.” Perry passed away in 2022, though her legacy carries on.
The Irene Perry Invitational Golf Tournament is a nine-hole scramble, with check-in at 7:30 a.m. and a shotgun start at 8 a.m. sharp. Golf enthusiasts of all levels are welcome to come out and enjoy a fun day on the links with members of the Capital City Garden Club.

Following that fun event, all amateur golfers are invited to play in the JLB Championship! This signature 18-hole golf tournament, named for the late local legend Johnnie Lee Brown, takes place on Saturday, Sept. 27. Don’t miss your opportunity to compete. The tournament is open to AMATEUR GOLFERS ONLY, and the field is limited to the first 48 players. Flights will be determined after the entry deadline.
In 1984, playing 18 holes on the 9-hole course, Brown shot an unprecedented 59! This is your chance to try and surpass his amazing score. Before retiring, Brown landed his dream job as a ranger at Jake Gaither Golf Course, where he worked and mentored junior golfers for 18 years. Come play and fellowship in honor of a lifelong golfer who learned to love the game as a kid while caddying and went on to share his passion with the next generation. Brown passed away in 2021.
