Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, is an annual holiday celebrated on June 19th in the United States. It commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in Texas on June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger announced General Order No. 3, proclaiming freedom for all slaves in the state. This announcement came two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation, which officially abolished slavery in Confederate states, but was not enforced in Texas until Granger's arrival. Juneteenth is a time for reflection, celebration, and remembrance of African American history and heritage.
