🥋 THIS is why who teaches your Jiu-Jitsu matters.
Watch this video and then ask yourself: What exactly is your BJJ coach qualified to teach you?
There is a HUGE difference between being a good Jiu-Jitsu practitioner and being a Certified Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Instructor.
At Gracie University, instructor certification isn’t simply, “I’m a black belt, so I can teach.”
There is an actual instructor-development process designed to ensure that instructors understand WHAT to teach, HOW to teach it, WHY it works, and how the curriculum is supposed to progress.
Our instructors train in a standardized curriculum developed by the Gracie family. We are evaluated on our technique, our teaching ability, our communication, and our ability to deliver the curriculum correctly. The certification process includes multiple phases, extensive instructor training, video evaluations, and a live evaluation at Gracie University Headquarters in Torrance, California. And here’s something people sometimes get hung up on:
Rank isn’t everything.
A black belt doesn’t automatically make someone a great teacher.
What matters is training, knowledge, teaching ability, curriculum, and the standards behind the person teaching you.
At our school, you’re not just getting someone who knows how to roll.
You’re getting instructors who have invested countless hours into learning the Gracie University system and how to teach it correctly.
That’s a BIG difference.
We don’t just make up a class every time we step on the mat.
We follow a proven curriculum.
We don’t just teach techniques.
We teach principles, concepts, timing, strategy, and self-defense.
And most importantly, we want our students to know that the person standing in front of them has been trained and evaluated to teach.
So when you’re choosing a Jiu-Jitsu school, don’t just ask:
“What belt is your coach?”
Ask:
👉 Who trained them to teach?
👉 What curriculum do they follow?
👉 Is there a standardized progression?
👉 How are instructors evaluated?
👉 Is there accountability for what is being taught?
Because who teaches you matters.
And THAT is one of the reasons we are so proud to be part of the Gracie University Certified Training Center network. 🥋
