To get a concealed carry weapon (CCW) permit in Bakersfield, you must apply through the Kern County Sheriff's Office and satisfy all state and local requirements. The process involves completing an online application, passing a background check, and taking a state-mandated training course.
Eligibility requirements
To qualify for a CCW license in California, you must meet the following criteria:
Be at least 21 years old.
Be a resident of Kern County or work in the county.
Possess good moral character.
Own the handgun(s) you wish to list on the permit. All fi****ms must be registered to you with the California Department of Justice.
Not be a "disqualified person" under federal or California law, which includes certain felony and misdemeanor convictions, drug addiction, and specific mental health diagnoses.
Application process
Start your online application. Go to the Kern County Sheriff's Office website and navigate to the Licensing Unit page to find the link for the online application, which is processed through Permitium.
Submit documents. Prepare to upload scanned copies of required documents, including:
A valid California driver's license or ID card with your current address.
Two forms of proof of residency (e.g., utility bills, vehicle registration).
Proof of employment in Kern County, if applicable.
Complete the background check. All applicants will be fingerprinted via Live Scan. For Kern County, Live Scans for CCW permits must be done at the Sheriff's Office and require an appointment.
Complete a 16-hour training course. As required by California Senate Bill 2 (effective January 1, 2024), new CCW applicants must complete a 16-hour training course approved by the Kern County Sheriff's Office. The course includes classroom instruction on fi****ms safety and handling, as well as a live-fire range qualification with each firearm you wish to carry. Do not take this course until instructed to do so by the CCW unit.
Attend an interview. The licensing unit will review your application and conduct an interview to discuss your personal history. You will also provide three character references, one of whom must be a cohabitant if applicable.
Pay fees. You will be required to pay several fees throughout the process, including an initial application fee, Live Scan fees, and the training course fee.
Await approval and pick up. Once your application is approved, you will be notified and can schedule an appointment to pick up your permit at the Kern County Sheriff's Office headquarters.
