Buckle Earned: Brenda Folkerts’ First 100 at Ultra Fest

Brenda Folkerts (MM15695, DA3674, HF18068) finished her first 100-miler at Ultra Fest in Easton, Washington, on September 19–20.

Brenda Folkerts: “…I’ve dreamt and planned for this day for at least 5 years and I’m seriously crying tears of joy as I write this. Thank you to my friend Cecilia who kept my pace in check for the first 28 miles while she ran her 100k on the same course, to my team of pacers, Chris, Kat, Tiffanie, Michelle and Adriana who came onboard at 54 miles and each took a turn encouraging and supporting me to the finish, to my husband who was the best crew support a girl could have! And to all the doctors who told me that someone with severe rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and POTS could not run 100M, yesterday I proved you all wrong…”

Donuts, Trolls, and State 49 at the Boring Marathon

Debby Cannon (MM15148) ran the Boring Marathon on September 13 for marathon #238.

Debby Cannon: “Boring Marathon #238 state #49. After a flight delay and not getting to my hotel until after 1 am- I didn’t set an alarm and missed the early start for this race. I did make it on time but pretty much everyone I knew had taken the early start. It was an out and back course x2 for the marathon. I wasn’t able to run with anyone but I did get to pass them on the trail a few times and it brightened my day! Avoided stepping on slugs, looking out for trolls u see the bridge, and loved the aid stations complete with donuts, goldfish, candy and more…”

Back Where It Started: Ed Toews at the Queen City Marathon

Ed Toews (MM9501, DA3146, HF16852) finished the Queen City Marathon on September 13 in 5:59, just inside the 6-hour cutoff.

Ed Toews: “…I’m just grateful to be out there and able to do these events. I especially love this event because it was my first marathon I ever did back in 2012. This is a top notch event that cares about the participants and treats everyone like they are important. Every detail in the race has been carefully planned out and executed. It is an honor to be a participant. They have a 6 hour rule to finish and I needed pretty much the full time of 5:59 to complete it… ‘There will come a day I cannot do this, today was not that day.’”

Lightning, Rain, and 33.6 Miles at the Goose Bumps 24 Hour Run

Tim Mullican(MM7655) covered the Goose Bumps 6 and 24 hour run on Goose Island near La Crosse, September 18–19.

Tim Mullican: “I had a good weekend on Goose Island near LaCrosse, WI, at the Goose Bumps 6 & 24 hour run, despite heavy rain early Saturday morning that dumped somewhere between 4.5 to 5 inches of rain during a lightning pause that lasted almost 5 hours. No time was added at the end to make up for the lost time as this is just something you have to deal with during ultramarathons… I ended up officially with 33.6 miles, but forgot to start my watch until after the first loop, so only recorded 30.84 miles on my watch… No medal, but running is our reward.”

Lifetime Half #267: Randy Riley at the Akron Marathon Half
Randy Riley (MM14470, DA3218, HF16432) finished the Akron Marathon Half on September 26 in 2:41:55, third in his age group.

Randy Riley: “…I started out with the 2:45 pace group. They were doing the Jeff Galloway pacing system and I was struggling to keep up because I don’t train that way. By 3 1/2 miles I was 50’ behind and needed to stop at a porta. Of course when I came out they were out of sight. I was okay with that because the pressure was off and I could run my own pace. Oddly enough 5 miles later I caught the group and passed them. I finished in 2:41:55 so it worked out better for me since I finished 3 minutes ahead of my goal! That was good enough for a third place AG… Lifetime half #267.”
