Important Classic Ski Information for DTJNT
This weekend, we are doing classic ski skills & drills. No skate skis, as the coaches have got a lot of work that really depends on the "kick" of your ski, not the "glide". We are asking, if your child is in the Squirrels, Rabbits, or even the Owls, to make sure your athlete has either fish scales on the bottom of their skis, or comes prepared with a great kick wax job. (I listed the athletes that are in the Bears group later on in this post, if I don't list your name, assume your child is in one of these groups.)
Right now, the weather on Saturday for practice looks to be over 40F, which makes it very tricky for kick waxing. It might be VR75 hard wax, it might even be some universal klister. VR75 and klister is not wax the coaches can easily apply outside the yurt, so please make sure to come prepared for the expected warm conditions.
I will be putting Chloe on fish scales, for sure, as I want to make sure she has great kick so she can focus on her technique and not have to worry about slipping out the entire practice.
If you are renting skis through DTR, I cannot stress enough that getting there early is key. For both skis and poles, DTR has a limited supply, and at 2:15, they might be out of skis in your child's size.
If your athlete is in the Bears group, (Christoff, Laurel, Jack, Lia, Michael, Rachel, Sam) we think they can get away with skiing on traditional classic skis. Those skiers are advanced enough to be able to learn how to make traditional wax work in the expected conditions. Friday night, check the weather, and make sure you your child have skis properly prepared for some good classic kicking. There are plenty of resources on the internet on how to wax for warm hard wax days and klister days, anything by SWIX would be a top notch resource.
I look forward to seeing everyone on Saturday, the season is winding down, but we still got lots of great skiing left!
