Oooof . . Today I wanna talk about the importance of unilateral training. Thats a big, weird, word right? If you've never heard of it, like I was, you could be missing half your training potential. In fitness, it refers to working one side of a two part system. For example one bicep at a time instead of both or pressing with one side of your body for focused chest work forcing your other half to compensate for the weight or single leg emphasis while training glutes, hamstrings, quads, or calves. Well today I realized I have a massive week spot. I've been aware of it for some time yet had failed to realize just how bad it has gotten.
Today I went into the gym eager for a leg session. Started out with leg press gradually adding weight to do a dynamic warm up. Felt good, warmed up, so I moved onto a lift that I had done *last week* because I saw the challenge in it and I find when its difficult, that's probably what my body needs most. Not certain of the exact name but basically a single leg Romanian dead lift. Holding a dumbbell I would hip hinge keeping the leg im training mostly straight with a slight bend in the knee and allowing the other leg to rise as a counter balance. I'm not moving weight. Im focused on control, balance, steadiness, and engaging my week hamstrings and glutes. Last week it felt great! I had a difficult time remaining balanced on one foot for all the reps but in the days following I noticed a return in stability that I had missed.
When I tried the same exercise today with 30% less weight to emphasize control and balance, my right leg lit up! There's a tenderness deep inside running along my quad sweep making that lift today just about unbearable. Talk about being humbled, thanks gym. There is a lot to learn from this. My body NEEDS unilateral training especially on my lower body to repair this massive week spot and it doesn't matter where you start from or are returning from. The point is the comeback. Get in there, do your best, learn from mistakes, adapt, evolve. I love you guys 💪
