One of the nicest and most enjoyable activities that any Commander can be a part of is the recognition of individual achievement. This responsibility presents challenges as well; it requires careful assessment of each decision with a desire to include as many individuals as possible. However, we are constrained by a limited budget and deliberately limit our awards to ensure that our selections represent the highest of the Onondaga County American Legion. We carefully narrow a list of outstanding candidates to a select few whose recognized actions exemplify qualities that should serve as a model for others.

NOTE: Missing is the Commander's Award for Excellence in Membership, awarded to Robert J. Hydon Post 239's Membership Chairman, Thomas Blair, for his Post having the third-highest renewal rate in Onondaga County this year, 102.29%, and the 4th-highest retention rate in the 5th District, 100.95%.

Syracuse Post 41 continues the tradition of placing flags on the graves of our brothers and sisters interred at Oakwood Cemetery in Syracuse, NY. Oakwood is the Cemetery adopted by Post 41.

Dedicated in 1859, we were all honored to be walking the trails and hills of one of the oldest and most prestigious of cemeteries in our area. Especially moving is the number of veterans that are resting here, including a large section dedicated to those who fought in the U.S. Civil War.

Although we got hit with rain and it cooled off quite a bit, we were able to get most of our flags down. Plus, we had a little pizza and wings at the end, even though it was raining, it tasted great.
