In Loving Memory of "Big Daddy"
In 2000, I was given the incredible opportunity to take over the head women’s coaching position from Turhan Douglas (Turbo). That moment marked the beginning of my journey as a coach—but more importantly, it marked the beginning of a life-changing mentorship with a man I came to know, respect, and love deeply: Big Daddy.
Sharing an office with him was one of the greatest privileges of my life. I came into that role full of hope, but after a tough 0-20 season, I was crushed. I sat in that office one day, completely defeated, and decided I was done. Coaching wasn’t for me. I was ready to return to my old engineering career.
Big Daddy didn’t try to convince me otherwise with words. Instead, he handed me John Wooden’s Blue Book and asked me to read the page about Abraham Lincoln’s life—decades of setbacks, failures, and heartbreaks before he became one of history’s greatest leaders. Then Big Daddy quietly walked away.
Thirty minutes later, he returned, placed a hand on my shoulder, looked me in the eye, and asked, “Do you still want to quit, young man?”
That single moment shifted the course of my life. His belief in me—and in perseverance, humility, and lifelong growth—became the foundation of my coaching philosophy. Without Big Daddy, I truly don’t believe I would have stayed the course. His wisdom and quiet strength shaped not just my career, but my character.
Big Daddy was more than a coach or colleague. He was a mentor, a teacher, and a true example of what it means to lead with grace and purpose.
When a man leaves this earth, the only thing of real value he leaves behind is his legacy. And Big Daddy's legacy is one of greatness, generosity, and impact that will be felt for generations to come.
Rest in peace, Big Daddy. You will never be forgotten.
