The regular squirrel season has wrapped but for most folks but here’s an opportunity to help out as Spring seasons open back up or to think about for next Fall.

“ATTENTION: Squirrel ears needed!

Dear Squirrel Hunters,

My name is John Vanek and I’m a wildlife biologist working with a team to better understand the ecology of tree squirrels. In particular, we’re trying to figure out why the black morph of the Gray Squirrel is now only found in a few cities and some northern forests. Believe it or not, at one point, black was actually the dominant morph across much of its range!

So, how can you help? We’re looking for DNA samples (piece of an ear) from squirrels (gray OR black) legally harvested around a few key cities in the US and Canada: Syracuse (NY), Niagara Falls (ON and NY), Detroit (MI), Washington DC, Princeton (NJ), Wooster (OH), Kent (OH), Westfield (MA), Guelph (ON), Ottawa (ON), Toronto (ON), and Kingston (ON).

If this something you can help us with, please send me an email at [email protected] and we can send you more information, a data sheet, and collection equipment (vial for the sample, gloves, and shipping container) *at no cost to you*.
