If you know, you know. Don't feed the birds, but do give them a perch.
There's a spot at Whistler, at the 7th Heaven Express Chair, where birds called the Clark's Nutcrackers hang out on a sunny day.
They perch atop the posts of the ski area map and look down on the crowd, as lines stretch out.
On sunny days, the skiers queue up here, hoping to enjoy the long sun-exposed runs that go on and on. Waiting in line myself here, I noticed skiers raising their ski pole tips up in the air. What’s this? I thought. Why are all these ski poles upside down, held like an umbrella without a top.
Tips up, tips up. Why are they all held patiently in the air?
And then I saw my answer. The Clark's Nutcracker a gray bird with black wings left its perch atop the sign, and came to rest, balanced on top of a ski pole.
The crowd enjoys watching. Another bird flies into the queue of skiers and rests on a pole tip, looking down over the skiers.
I’m not quite sure how the nutcrackers were trained to do this. Perhaps they were coaxed with food at one time. I hope not. Do not feed the birds. Watch. Enjoy. Do not feed. It is not healthy for them to eat human food.
This show continues on the whole time we stand in line, and birds even perch occasionally on someone's outstretched glove, or the top of a helmet. Fun entertainment that makes the line feel like it moves faster.
