Taught a 223 Carbine Class two weeks ago and took some time to film a short segment on Non-Standard Responses.

String of Singles - 4 to 6 shots fired in rapid succession while keeping them within the heart/lung scoring area on a Gunsite Academy Option Target or 8” circle for other targets. I like string of singles for checking my stance/posture for managing recoil. It also teaches you to track your dot during recoil. However, when firing in close succession you tend to shoot to the speed of your trigger or faster than you can see and process your shots, which for the average person is around 3/10ths of a second.

The other version of a Non-Standard Response is Linked Pairs - 2 to 3 Hammer or Controlled Pairs depending upon the size and distance of the target. Linked Pairs allow the shooter time (3/10ths to 4/10ths) to assess between pairs, particularly Hammer Pairs.

Full Auto for an M4 Carbine is about 700 rounds per minute or 0.085 second split times. Shooting a string of singles locked in tight you can manage 0.12-0.14 which extremely close to full auto but allows the shooter to manage the recoil and keep the rounds effectively on target.

A nice video on the history of Aimpoint optics by Ian. However, as Director of Military Business Development for Aimpoint US from 2007-2011, I need to make a few corrections:

The CompM2 has a 10,000 hour battery life on setting 7 of 10. 365 x 24 =8,760 hours. Basically one year battery life.
The US military procured over 280,000 CompM2s.

The CompM3 Advanced Electronic Circuitry Technology LED improved battery life to 50,000 hours on setting 7 of 10. Or basically five years.

CompM4 has an 80,000 hour battery life with a AA alkaline battery on 12 of 16 and with a Lithium AA battery it can last 10-15 years. The US military procured 339,000 CompM4 sights through three separate contracts (2006-2009) 565,000 CompM4S sights through an IDIQ contract in 2009.

Of course all Aimpoint optics, especially the CompM, M2, M3, M4, M4S, M5, M5S, and Micro series optics need either a Combat Optic Tool or Combat Sight Tool or the very new CST-10 to help with mounting and windage/elevation adjustments.
