Bulgarian split squats are one of the most effective exercises for developing unilateral leg strength, balance and lower-body control.
Because each leg works independently, the Bulgarian split squat challenges the quadriceps, glutes and hamstrings while improving hip stability and exposing strength differences between sides. The elevated rear foot also allows the working leg to move through a greater range of motion than many traditional lunge variations.
Your stance length, torso angle and front-foot position can change which muscles receive the greatest emphasis. Prioritize stability, maintain control through the entire repetition and choose a range of motion that fits your current mobility and strength.
Master the position first. Then progressively add resistance.
