To teach someone to box is no easy task. So I admire the coaches that have taken the time to either step in the ring themselves or actually study and breakdown the sweet science for their fighters. It takes tough skin in the game and many hours of studying other boxers body’s and how they move. Boxing itself is a beautiful science because it’s all about behaviors and habits. If you’re good at watching and observing people, in the ring, they’ll tell you what they’ll be doing next. It’s up to you to be ready and capitalize if you were observant enough. The beauty is that with the right team you have many eyes helping you see these “missing links” you may have had.
People want to learn to box for many different reasons. I get it. But ultimately you gotta want to step in there and take a punch or give a punch. That’s the real test. The real accomplishment between the relationship you’ve built with your body and coach. That’s the opportunity to expose your growth or your lack of focus in certain places. There’s no time frame either, it could take 1 month before you say “I’m down to step in the ring” or it could take 10 years - I hope it’s sooner than that - but that’s real, so long as in the back of your mind while you’re training your foot work or hitting the bag you’re thinking that someone sometime will be punching your face. What will you do when that time comes?
