Meet Crush!

Crush is also beginning his journey under saddle along with Nemo. He had the saddle sat on him for the first time and has begun learning to lunge.

Nemo took another big step in his training today! For the first time, he wore a saddle on his back—without a girth—allowing him to get comfortable with the feel of the equipment in a relaxed, pressure-free way. He handled it with curiosity and confidence, taking everything in stride. One step closer to his first ride!

Nemo!

Nemo is a 2-year-old Saddlebred who has recently begun his journey under saddle. His natural gaits are developing nicely, he's becoming confident with his basic commands, and now we've moved on to an important milestone: the mounting block.

The mounting block is much more than just a place to get on a horse. It helps prepare a young horse for the many sensations that come with carrying a rider for the first time. From this position, Nemo learns to accept someone above him in a rider-like position, become comfortable with being touched on both sides simultaneously, feel weight placed across his back, and gain confidence with the mounting process itself.

By breaking each step into small, understandable lessons, we help create a horse that is relaxed, confident, and trusting before ever taking those first rides. A solid foundation today builds a safer and more willing partner for the future.

Nemo continues to impress us with his attitude and willingness to learn, and we're excited to watch his education progress.

🐎 120 Days Under Saddle 🐎

One of the greatest mistakes in horse training is measuring progress by how quickly a horse can perform a movement. True progress is measured by the quality of the foundation being built beneath it.

This young horse is approximately 120 days under saddle. At this stage, our focus is not on advanced movements, but on developing balance, relaxation, rhythm, straightness, and understanding. Every ride is an opportunity to improve strength, confidence, and communication.

Notice that the work remains simple. We are teaching the horse to carry itself correctly, respond softly to the aids, and move with increasing coordination and self-confidence. These early months lay the groundwork for everything that comes later.

Classical horsemanship reminds us that the horse's education is a process, not an event. Through patience, consistency, and thoughtful training, today's young horse becomes tomorrow's willing and athletic partner.

There are no shortcuts to developing a horse correctly. There is only good work, repeated day after day.

The canter is a gait of balance and rhythm. Rather than pulling or restricting the horse, we can influence the tempo and collection by applying subtle half halts on the moments of suspension—the upbeats of the stride.

By timing the aid with the horse's natural movement, we encourage the hindquarters to step further underneath the body, lighten the forehand, and bring greater balance to the gait. The result is not a slower canter created by resistance, but one that becomes more elevated, more organized, and more expressive.

For a young horse, this work develops strength, coordination, and self-carriage. Through patience, correct timing, and consistent practice, the horse learns to carry itself with increasing balance and confidence.

Collection is not about creating less movement—it is about creating more quality within each stride.

The Varying Degrees of Shoulder-In and Finding a Rhythm

One of the greatest gifts we can give a young horse is time.

As strength, balance, and coordination are still developing, movements such as shoulder-in become valuable tools—not because we seek a perfect angle, but because they help the horse learn to carry itself more correctly. By working through varying degrees of shoulder-in, we can gradually improve suppleness, encourage engagement of the hindquarters, and help the horse discover better balance without force or tension.

For a young horse, the smallest degree of shoulder-in may be enough. As understanding and strength increase, the movement can slowly develop. The goal is never to create more bend than the horse can comfortably maintain, but to find a rhythm where balance and relaxation remain unchanged.

Through patience and consistent practice, the horse learns to organize its body, become lighter in the forehand, and move with greater self-carriage. Each ride builds upon the last, and over time what begins as a simple positioning of the shoulders grows into a true gymnastic exercise.

Classical dressage is not about rushing the movement—it is about allowing the horse to develop it. Strength, balance, and collection are not imposed; they are cultivated one correct step at a time.
