This afternoon's hike paid off! After walking thru the marsh in shin deep water to get to the piece of woods I wanted to walk through I was a bit worried when I stepped foot into the tree line and saw the woods weren't looking like they were quite ready yet. But there was no turning back now so I wrapped along the bottom of the south facing ridge until I came up on this little valley that was looking nice and green. The area was looking promising but the only problem was I wasn't seeing much of the right trees in there. Finally came across a tree that had a few small grey morels underneath it. Was a little disappointed thinking I was going to find some nice morels to pick especially after that miserable walk thru the marsh. Checked the area a little bit more for more sign of life with no luck. Continued to wrap around the ridge until the woods became bare again. Decided to turn around and double check the area I found the small greys in. Got back to the area the morels were at but just alittle bit further down the hill and as soon as I stepped over a log I almost stepped on a nice big black morel. Took a second to process what I was seeing as this was the first time ever finding black morels. They seem to be pretty rare in this part of the state don't see many reports of them being found around here. As soon as I realized what was sitting in front of me I looked up and black morels started popping out of the leaf litter everywhere I looked! Man do they blend in with the surroundings! Crazy thing is, I was about 10 yards from all these mushrooms the first time I was in the area and never saw them! They didn't seem to be associated with any trees like the other morels typically are. They were scattered up and down the whole ridge in nice sunny open areas which made it hard to gather them all up. Im sure there's still some sitting out there! Never know what you'll find out there!
