WE are a GOOOOOOO! 😀
USFS had a community meeting last night and although the McCully Fire is 0% contained they have fears of it getting to Sumpter! Great News. I have contacted and gave our plans to
the District Ranger for Wallowa-Whitman Forest
Sheriff Travis Ash
and called by County Commissioner Shane Alderson
and received nothing but thumbs up 👍 & no questions, cause they all know... Sumpter Valley ATV Association runs a tight "ATV"! lol
Granite Mayor Dan is getting the groceries for the burger run Mitch is dusting off Freemont Powerhouse (ok that might be a stretch lol) and The Norbert owner of the Red Boy Mine is bringing a few hard hats for those who would like to venture into the mine with him.
NOW THEN... prepare yourself to hear this from "Ol' Dad" here,
there are lots of firefighting traffic in town, so we really need to be aware of this as we want no incidents for them or you 🫵 &
while on the rides, STAY ON THE GRAVEL, DO NOT PARK ON ANY GRASS.

So, get your camper ready, get you shopping done and LET'S GET READY TO RIDE!
and bring binoculars if ya got'em!

Weather / Fire report. Friday 8-28-2026
The smoke has been pretty thick in town this week, but generally blows out by 10-11 am and it's been very nice in Sumpter evenings, in fact if you look to the south, it's just another summer day! but when you turn around and look behind you THERE'S A FOREST FIRE! 🤦
The fires are still a ways away and seems to be burning away from town
We will ride way around the McCully fire to Granite on Sunday and completely the opposite direction to Marbel Pass Saturday and we will have a fire watch trailing behind the rest of us about 20 minutes to make sure we are great stewards of the forest...and not starting any fires.

cooler weather is predicted as I truly think this was the last week of hot summer 🤞so throw in your fire fighting equipment and a jacket!

the USFS will be addressing the town tonight at 6pm tonight so I will post any changes after that.

Hello SVATVA Riders!
Fire Report;

As of this time things are looking ok for Ride the Elkhorns!
We will be riding far around to Granite or away to Marble Pass from the fires. The thing I've been concerned with is the smoke, it's actually been pretty clear here all summer with the other fires as the wind has been blowing the smoke and hopefully the fires away from Sumpter. It was smoky this morning but now its gone for the most part. So, we are moving forward with some fun!!!!!!!!!!!

Whoo hoo!

We're about a month out! The Fires are moving away from Sumpter, and we've actually had "good" air in Sumpter, compared to alot of the region. So we are pressing forward with
"RIDE THE ELKHORNS!"
Saturday we'll ride to Marble Pass then drop over the backside and visit Old Souls Farm & Market for Ice Cream and shopping for??? This is a really nice little country store 🙂
Sunday, we ride to Granite for lunch at the Granite Mountain Fire Station to benefit the fire station and you can say hello to the crew from the little station that put out some early on small fires that could have been much bigger. good job Firefighters!
Then we will visit Freemont Powerhouse and hoping to stop at the Red Boy Mine. and have Mitch tell us about the mine!

I'm sure campfires will not be allowed (Propane pits are fine) but bring warm clothes as the mornings have been crisp & all summer!
