When I talk to older adults, between 60 and 85, I hear much too often that they don’t have the “motivation” to work out. With aging joints and chronic illnesses, finding motivation to get off the couch seems impossible.
But here’s the truth. Motivation has nothing to do with it. I never get up in the morning with my knees going, “Let’s go do lunges!
Working out, in whatever way you decide works for you, is about commitment. Commitment to what? Commitment to the future you. Do you see yourself on a golf course or using a walker? Do you want to be sharing life with grandchildren or sitting on the couch when they come for a visit? Yes, we are slowly falling apart, but we don’t need to be sedentary.
Find a gym, a trainer, a senior center, a park district, or even the Silver Sneakers app. By the way, even if your supplement plan doesn’t include Silver Sneakers, you can access recorded workouts if you sign up as a fan.
If you don’t know where to start, try different things until you find the workouts you will repeat. If you are nervous about working out, check with your doctor. Movement is life, and you’re not done yet.
Train for function, forget motivation, and commit to the future you who will thank you.
There will be more posts in 2026 to help you find your way. Stayed tuned.
