What do licensed skydivers do for fun? Build a racetrack in the sky 🏁

This is a pylon race. Two people hold the tubes — those are the pylons — and everyone else flies laps around them for as long as freefall lasts. Most laps wins. Wins what? Nothing. Bragging rights!

Nobody teaches you this in AFF. You just get your license, show up on a Saturday, and someone in the hangar says "hey, want to try something fun."

That's the whole reason to do this.

Every tandem student lands and says some version of the same thing: when can I do that again?

Here's the part most people don't know — you don't have to keep doing it strapped to somebody.

Our AFF program is how you get your own license. Own gear, own canopy, your own two feet in the door of the Twin Otter at 14,000 feet, nobody behind you. It starts with a ground school that walks you through everything: freefall body position, canopy control, emergency procedures, the whole foundation. Then you jump — with instructors flying beside you instead of attached to you — and each jump you take over a little more until you're doing it yourself.

And here's the part people really don't know: it takes 25 jumps to earn your license, and every jump counts. Including the tandem you already did. If you've jumped with us before, you're not starting at zero. You started the day you landed.

Classes run every Friday.

You can't talk in freefall. The air is too loud and moving too fast. So there you are, having the single best minute of your life, and there's no way to say a word about it.

But you can feel it everywhere. In your chest, in your face, in the grin you couldn't wipe off if you tried. That much happiness has to go somewhere.

A scream doesn't carry. A thumbs-up doesn't come close. But a heart? A heart says all of it. To the camera. To whoever's waiting on the ground. To the friend who talked you into this. To the version of you that almost didn't get on the plane.

It's the only word big enough up there.

Ruth is an aerospace engineer. She has spent her career on the math of flight — lift, drag, airfoils, the whole thing. She knows exactly why an airplane stays up.

But knowing and knowing are two different things. So she came out to Sturtevant, rode our Twin Otter to 14,000 feet, and went out the door to find out for herself.

No wings. No fuselage. Just her, the air, and about sixty seconds of the thing she's studied her entire life.

Da Vinci sketched flying machines he'd never fly. Ruth builds them — and now she's flown without one.

Turning 18 means you can finally do a lot of things. Serena and Jenna picked the best one. 🎂

These two celebrated their 18th birthday the only way that makes sense — 14,000 feet over Wisconsin with Lake Michigan on the horizon and nothing but sky between them and the ground. Add in a birthday sister in the mix and you've got one seriously unbeatable family photo album.

Happy birthday, Serena and Jenna. Welcome to adulthood. You're already doing it right. 🪂
