The South Dakota Field Office plans to conduct prescribed burns on the Fort Meade Recreation Area near Sturgis as soon as conditions permit.

Burning is planned for an area south of the Old Fort Meade VA cemetery, representing about 500 acres. Smoke may be visible from Interstate 90, State Highway 34, State Highway 79, and the city of Sturgis.

Burn objectives are to reduce hazardous fuels accumulations, reduce ponderosa pine stand densities, and restore a more balanced pine-savanna habitat.

Reducing plant litter, decadent grass, and fuel accumulations will also lower the likelihood or intensity of future wildfires in the area. Prescribed fire also encourages new growth in forage.

For additional information call the South Dakota Field Office at 605-892-7000.

The Fort Meade Backcountry Byway (near Sturgis, S.D.) will be undergoing road construction starting this April and finishing by the end of July (2022). The BLM South Dakota Field Office, working with the Federal Highways Administration will work jointly to improve the Backcountry Byway.

The project will include 5.2 miles of road improvements: resurfacing with gravel, reconstructing the North end to a lower grade, reconstructing the Old Stone Road and Horse Soldier Road intersection, construct erosion controls, improve signage, and improve existing parking areas and turnouts.

The project will start on the south end starting in late April and progress to the North end. It will be completed prior to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. During this time, the road will be closed to the public with limited access to the campgrounds, trailheads and the Old Post Cemetery. This project will provide a safer driving experience and reduce overall maintenance costs once completed. For more info, contact the South Dakota Field Office at (605) 892-7000.
