Prairie On Fire Backyard Ultra

Prairie On Fire Backyard Ultra MTC's PRAIRIE ON FIRE, Central Indiana's first Backyard Ultra is back for the 2nd year. What is a Backyard Ultra?

Chances are, if you're here, you already know, but, in case you don't, here's a breakdown from the originators:

"Backyard ultra is a form of ultramarathon race where competitors must consecutively run the distance of 6706 meters (4.167 miles) in less than one hour. When each lap is completed, the remaining time within the hour is typically used to recover for the next hour’s race." Now, here's wh

at makes our backyard unique:

The Prairie on Fire backyard ultra derives its name from a prominent park in central Indiana that hosts our event, Hamilton counties Koteewi Park. Pronounced ko-TAY-wee, Koteewi means “fire” and possibly “prairie” in the Miami-Peoria language. That etymology and the potential for a hot September day in Indiana created a perfect storm for us when naming this event. We couldn't be more excited to have the course at it's intended location with a beautiful gravel/dirt trail during the day and a paved trail in the evening. Thank you Hamilton County Parks and Recreation for partnering with us. This race will feature a very limited number of participants in effort to limit congestion on the trail, so sign up today!

Huge shoutout to Hamilton County Parks and Recreation for all of your hard work restoring the park and making it honestly look better than before. Humans are pretty cool. We are all a part of something so much bigger than ourselves.

One Year Ago, Kae ran 54 miles (13 Laps) at our race. This year she has a big goal. NEW SHOE DAY is the only shoe bank in Indiana.
They have relationships all over the Midwest that give them the ability to provide children with new, brand name, fresh out of the box shoes. There are a lot of reasons why a kid might not be able to get a new pair of shoes and whatever the reason NSD is there to help. Running is as easy as putting on a pair of shoes and heading out the door, but for too many children not having shoes is a barrier to entry. Kae wants to help solve that problem.
Some FAQ for Kae:
She runs on average 5-7 miles a week.
She only runs more than a couple miles once a year.
She sipped on one redbull over the course of 8ish hours.
She felt “totally fine” the next day after last year’s race.

Kae is certainly an inspiration to everyone at Prairie On Fire. She sets big goals for herself because she was inspired by her Dad (our race director and founder TJ Dailey ) his ultra running friends, and everyone at the backyard ultra.

At least year’s race _Angel Soto Lozada_ ran 100 miles for the first time, but he didn’t stop there. People in the community encouraged him to keep going.
His goal shifted from achieving a set mileage to, “just finish the lap and start the next one.” This mindset helped pushed him another 8 hours past a point where he thought he was finished. Angel went on to become one of the first 3 people in the history of our race to make it to the night course for a second night.
He finished 3rd and we’re excited to see what he does this year.
