MountainOps is an outdoor retail store specializing in hiking, biking, skiing and camping. We were established in 1995 and originally named Nordic Barn. However, the store has grown considerably to include retail, rentals and services for everything you'll need to operate in the mountains. Today, MountainOps is proud to offer an exciting, high-end collection of clothing and equipment for the outdo

or enthusiast. In 2014, Mansfield Cycles was added to help the business keep up with the growing demand of the Stowe bike scene.

*BACKCOUNTRY REPORT* - from guest reporter

While our snowpack took a hit, those rock skis can stay put away. There’s still plenty of snow all the way down to the trailhead. The usual seeps and streams opened up but you can easily skin up without any funky maneuvers. There’s a punch-crust up to around 2300ft but that will continue to dissipate as this cold front moves in and locks up our base.

If you do decide to go out, watch out for blowdowns. Lots of big limbs came down in the storm and many are locked in place with the new snow. Not a bad idea to throw a small folding saw in the pack to help keep the backcountry clear.

This little warm up could be a great reason to schedule a boot fit, drop your skis off for a tune, or mount up those skinny skis before everything locks back up. We are still 5-7 days out on tunes/mounts so get your gear in the queue soon!

BACKCOUNTRY REPORT:
We have had an absolute wild start to the backcountry ski season, BUT not everything is a green light yet. We checked out a couple different zones yesterday just to see how things are coming along. Here are a few bullet points we took away.

- The majority of snow is still at elevations 2,700ft and above. Although we are starting to get decent coverage down to 1,000 it needs to consolidate a bit more.
- The ground water is still doing a lot of damage. Making it tricky to navigate and creating “trap doors”.
- Watch out for wind affected zones. The snowpack can go from 3+ feet to 1 ft very quickly.

If checking out new zones makes sure you are ready for anything. Bring layers, food, water, charged phone, and an oh S$@! Kit.

Backcountry Report:
If feels weird to say it but the backcountry is in (elevation and location dependent). While in Sterling Forest there was consistently 7-9 inches at 1,600-2,000ft of elevation. This made for some wet spots along the Marston Trail skin track. Once above 2,000ft snow depths jumped all the way up to 18-24inch. There is a great supportive layer halfway down the snowpack that allows this snow to ski like mid season conditions. We all need a good support system.

Now I am not saying the backcountry is a full green light but it’s probably better than you would think for November.

A big thank you to for keeping these trails clear and making early season backcountry a possibility.
