Today is Firefighter’s Memorial Sunday, a solemn tradition observed every year on the second Sunday in June across Massachusetts and our nation.

Dating back to the earliest days of the fire service, this day is dedicated to remembering and honoring the courageous firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, as well as those who have passed away after dedicating their lives to serving our communities.

Here in Stoughton, and alongside our brothers and sisters in the fire service everywhere, we pause today to reflect on their bravery, their selflessness, and the profound legacy they have left behind.

To the families of our fallen and departed members: your loved ones are never forgotten. Their dedication to duty continues to inspire us every time the bell rings.

“No day shall erase you from the memory of time.”

Yesterday, our community experienced a profound tragedy. A young man lost his life in a heartbreaking incident at Ames Pond. We extend our deepest empathy, compassion, and heartfelt condolences to the victim’s family and friends who are navigating an unimaginable loss.

We also want to recognize the extraordinary efforts of all the emergency personnel who responded to this call. The firefighters of Group 3 worked seamlessly alongside our mutual aid brothers and sisters from the Easton, Avon, Canton, and Quincy Fire Departments. The Plymouth County Dive Team was activated and responded in with multiple dedicated members. We were also supported by our law enforcement partners from the Stoughton Police Department, the Massachusetts State Police, and the Massachusetts Environmental Police.

Incidents like this are devastating and they leave a lasting impact on all involved. We are incredibly grateful for the unwavering dedication, professionalism, and teamwork displayed by every single first responder on the scene.

We ask that you keep this young man, his loved ones, and all those affected in your thoughts.
