As a Michigan deer hunter, let’s talk about the new regulations.
Some background on me. I’m Michigan born and raised, and have been deer hunting in Michigan since 2006 with family. I’ve hunted private and public land all over the state, from the UP down to the Indiana line. Deer hunting is how we have meat for our years, and I haven’t bought meat since 2020.
My overall opinion on the changes is they’re overwhelmingly positive, and could lead to a better future for hunting in Michigan.
Removing the restricted firearm unit:
I have lots of thoughts here, but to sum it up, I think this is a neutral change. My 350 legend is just as effective at putting a deer down at 200 yards as my .308. In deer hunting, I’ve never taken a shot over 200 yards, and never plan to. Part of this is property dependent, but overall, I’ve never needed to. I’ll still clutch to my 350, 400 and 450 for now, but the .308 will enter the mix from time to time.
Limiting to one Buck in the LP:
HUGE win for Michigan buck hunters. If you’re out hunting for meat, this doesn’t affect you. If you’re hunting for antlers, this encourages you to harvest the best deer. We have a guiding principal on our property that you shouldn’t shoot a buck unless it’s the largest you’ve had a chance at, or unless you’re shaking like a madman in the tree. This makes you think before you pull the trigger, which is the right approach.
Removing the late season:
I disagree here. If the goal is to reduce doe populations, and head towards a 50/50 split between doe and bucks, Michigan hunters should have the opportunity to harvest a doe later in the year. This change means I have to shoot does earlier. In southern Michigan, we have days that are 80 degrees and sunny during October. This makes meat processing a challenge if you don’t have a cooler. I’d much prefer to shoot a doe with my crossbow or muzzleloader in January at -10 degrees vs one in October on an 80 degree day.
Maybe I’m reading this wrong, but I feel like the changes won’t impact me too much, but I’m happy they’re starting to take a serious look at buck populations, and doing something about it.
Let me know if you think differently, let’s discuss in the comments
