Sand Island looking out into Penobscot Bay, the second largest bay on the east coast of the USA. Any guesses at the largest? From any of these islands you can only see the mainland at one spot, the distant Camden Hills.

Maritime Boreal Fog Forest. This type of Forest looks like a rain forest with all year moss, green vegetation. It is similar to montane forest types near treeline in the Appalachians and the Boreal Forest belt across Canada, Alaska, Siberia and Scandanavia. It is mostly comprised of Red Spruce, White Spruce and Balsam Fir in the overstory. This forest type occurrs on Islands and peninsulas in Downeast Maine where there are thin soils on granite, moderate temperatures due to cool ocean water, and a lot of moisture due to rain and fog all year.

Mark Island Lighthouse of Stonington, Maine. This is the emblem of the local Island Heritage Trust that preserves many of our favorite islands. It used to actually have a house and was quite built up in the past, as you can see from these old photos. Unfortunately, a charging battery led to a fire that burnt it down.
