Queen Anne’s County is taking steps to protect and improve playing conditions at Blue Heron Golf Course.
This week, the greens on the back nine (holes 10–18) were reseeded and top-dressed as part of an early-season maintenance effort. Beginning Monday, these greens will be covered with protective greens blankets and will remain closed until early April to allow for proper root establishment and healthy growth.
This work follows the discovery of a turf disease known as Dollar Spot late last summer. Dollar Spot is a fungal disease that creates small, silver-dollar-sized pits in putting greens, resulting in uneven and inconsistent playing surfaces. While the disease can often be treated when first identified, it can become resistant to treatments over time and increasingly difficult to manage.
Reseeding was identified as the best and fastest long-term solution for restoring the back nine greens. The front nine greens (holes 1–9), which were previously redone, were not affected due to the newer grass type and remain open for play.
The reseeding work is being completed by in-house staff with minimal to no additional cost to the County. By scheduling this work early in the year, the goal is to minimize disruption during the peak golf season and ensure high-quality playing conditions for golfers throughout the spring and summer.
The County appreciates the patience and understanding of golfers during this temporary closure and looks forward to welcoming players back to the full course this spring.
