The Sterling Heights Nature Center has a new feathered ambassador, and he’s already turning heads.

Meet Fitz, a red-phase Eastern Screech Owl who has found his forever home at the Nature Center after an eye injury left him unable to survive in the wild.

Now, Fitz will help visitors connect with Michigan’s native wildlife while learning about conservation, rehabilitation and the important work that goes into caring for birds of prey.

His arrival is also a reflection of the dedication of Nature Center staff, who completed more than 250 hours of specialized training to provide the care and education required for raptor ambassadors like Fitz.

Stop by the Nature Center and give Fitz a warm Sterling Heights welcome on your next visit.

The Clinton River Park Trail is now closed for construction between Riverland Road and the Van D**e Avenue bridge near the Utica city line.

The project will replace approximately 3,100 feet of aging asphalt pathway and include drainage improvements designed to reduce recurring flooding and extend the life of the trail.

For the safety of trail users and construction crews, access through the closed section is not available. Please respect all posted closure signs and plan alternate routes during construction.

Work is expected to continue through the week following Independence Day, weather permitting.

Thank you for your patience as we make these important improvements to create a safer, smoother and more resilient trail experience.

Sterling Heights celebrated its first land preservation acquisition funded through the voter-approved Pathway to Play & Preservation millage. 🌳

This milestone represents the first step toward a vision for approximately 62 acres of connected open space along the Clinton River corridor, centered around future improvements at Rotary Park and the Belvedere Park area.

Together, we're preserving natural spaces today while creating opportunities for recreation, exploration and connection for generations to come.

Make a splash this summer by giving back. ☀️🩸 Join us for our upcoming Community Blood Drive on June 23 from 2:30-7 p.m. at the Sterling Heights Community Center.

One donation can help save multiple lives, and summer is one of the most critical times of year for blood supplies.

Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are preferred: bit.ly/4uv65FS

Hi there, friends! I’m Koda. 🐺👅

I’m a one-and-a half-year-old Pomeranian Husky. That half a year makes a real difference! I am almost all grown up. I am also a professional snack inspector and squirrel surveillance specialist.

This was my very first trip to Dodge Park, and I have already identified several squirrels that require immediate investigation. They may think they’re safe in those trees, but I’m keeping a very close eye on them.

In the meantime, I practice my “interview skills” on squeaky toys. Those things have a short life expectancy around me.

Despite my fierce reputation as a squirrel hunter and toy destroyer, I’m actually a pretty friendly guy! I love meeting new people and making new friends. And yes, my tongue hangs out a lot. No, I don’t know why. No, I’m not putting it away.

For a first visit, Dodge Park Thursday gets two paws up! Plenty of smells, plenty of dog-friendly vendors, and plenty of new friends to meet.

Don’t worry, Dodge Park Thursday. I’ll be back. 🐾💙
