So what exactly are “chelated“ vitamins and minerals?
You may have heard that the vitamins and minerals that we put in AntlerXtreme are “chelated”, but what does that really mean?
For starters, let’s look at the definition and origin of the word.
The "Claw": The word "chelate" (pronounced KEY-late) comes from the Greek word for "claw," describing how an amino acid wraps around a vitamin or mineral. This bond protects the mineral from interacting with other substances in the gut that might block its absorption. In supplements, "chelated" means that a vitamin or mineral is chemically bonded to an organic molecule, usually an amino acid, forming a "claw-like" structure that makes it more easily recognized, absorbed, and utilized by the body compared to non-chelated mineral forms. This improved absorption, or bioavailability, reduces potential digestive upset, making chelated minerals a more efficient way to deliver nutrients, especially for those with absorption issues.
If you’ve ever taken a multivitamin supplement, you might have noticed a significant change in the color of your urine. This is because much, if not most, of the vitamins and minerals pass through your body without being absorbed. This is why the ingredients lists will usually state that the supplement contains often 200%, 300%, even up to 1000% of the recommended daily value of those ingredients. Simply put, our bodies just don’t absorb vitamins and minerals efficiently. The same can be said for the digestive tracts of whitetail deer.
Enhanced Transport: The body recognizes the amino acid carrier, allowing the whole complex to be transported across the intestinal wall more effectively leading to much better absorption. Higher bioavailability means the body gets more of the mineral. This also means it’s gentler on the stomach and less likely to cause digestive issues.
In summary
The chelated minerals in AntlerXtreme offer a superior delivery system for essential nutrients, ensuring they are absorbed and used efficiently by the body, which is particularly beneficial for overall health, muscle function, stress management and of course antler growth!
