USA Today, called Big South Fork NRRA NPS, the Hidden Gem for the outdoor activities it has to offer at an affordable price.

BSFA offers a number of trips on the same river, but our Bear Creek to Blue Heron is the best unguided trip for those who are willing to make the rugged trek to the river to enjoy a day of beauty and seclusion.

This section is one of the most secluded areas of the Big South Fork River, and one the most under fish section. Great combination!

Beware of Devils Jump! A class III rapid!

The trip to Blue Heron is more than just a train ride.

Once you arrive at the historic mining community, you can explore the story of the people who lived and worked here and get a glimpse into the history that helped shape this part of Kentucky.

Meet at the take out, Blue Heron, get a short safety briefing and top-quality gear (life jacket, paddle), then pick your own pace and route.

I love how easy duckies make getting outside: they’re stable for kids, compact to transport, and forgiving for beginners. Pro tip: wear quick-dry clothes, bring a waterproof bag for your phone, and ask staff for route suggestions based on your time and skill level.
