25th Annual VEGAS CHALLENGE: MARCH 5-7, 2015
Presented by LA ROCQUE BETTER ROOFS, INC
The Vegas Challenge was started in 1990 by two long distance tri-athletes planning on doing the Las Vegas Marathon. While Guy La Rocque and Larry Rhoads were discussing their transportation issues they decided to eliminate their
vehicles and chose to ride their bicycles from Guy La Rocque’s home in Alta Loma, CA
along the I-15 freeway to Las Vegas, Nevada. They decided to stop the first day in Baker, CA, staying the night at the infamous Bunboy Hotel and then continuing on the following day into Las Vegas. The third day of the trip was to run the 26.2 mile Las Vegas Marathon. This tradition was carried on for the next 9 years with individuals joining in by invitation only. In 1991, Nick Moore, and Jim Picker joined the group, later Andre Gonzalez, Ken Kramer, Phil Kramer, Victor de Silva, Teresa Osborn Gonzalez, Adam Towle, Patrick Watson, Brian Duff, Addy Goodvibes, Suzanne Sonye, Bobby Verenna, Gwen Errfmeyer, Tony Resuccia, Dan Able, Jessie Kimball, Danny Moy, Jeff Cody, Cory McCrosky, Dave Ruby, Steve Mortellero, Chuck Marshall, John Gable, Dianette Wells and an a host of Adventure Racers, Pro Triathletes and Cyclists have attended. Due to the dangerous traffic conditions that have increased over the years along the I-15, in 1999 the starting venue was moved from its original location of Alta Loma, CA to Palm Springs, CA. The new starting venue increased the difficulty, the mileage, the road conditions and the total amount of climbing for the entire ride exceeds 15, 800 feet. Since its inception in 1990, the ride has continued by invitation only which has included several very talented professionals as well as amateur cyclists, tri-athletes and adventure racers. If the ride was not tough enough for you, in addition we made it mandatory to run or walk the 13.1 mile Las Vegas Half-Marathon on the third day. For those individuals that are able to finish all three days they will receive a special Finishers Trophy and a T-Shirt as well as bragging rights for completing this memorable event. Over the years the timing and course of the ride have changed to coincide with the Las Vegas Marathon, which varied from December to February. This time of the year has also brought some unexpected weather conditions to contend with such as rain, snow, wind, and sun. As the sun begins to set on that first day of riding, the temperatures can drop dramatically and the desert becomes black, which can be additionally challenging if you are one of the unlucky ones to still be in the saddle trying get to Baker.
