April 18, 2026: Improve your casting skills with Orvis casting guru, Pete Kutzer here at Cross Current Outfitters. 10:00 AM to noon, Pete will be giving a casting demo for both one handed casting and two handed spey casting, applicable to both trout Spey casting and salmon/steelhead fishing. Immediately following a brief break, Pete will be giving more detailed and personalized group casting lessons, for either one handed casting, and/or two handed casting. The fee for the group lessons is $125 per person with pre registration required. Email us at [email protected] if you’d like to sign up for this opportunity to be coached by a master fly caster.

Pete Kutzer has been a fly fishing and casting instructor at the Orvis Fly Fishing School since 2002. His many instructional videos have been featured on the Orvis Learning Center and other venues. We have a week of summer coming before we go back to spring. This will start the early season mayfly hatches of baetis, blue quills, Quill Gordon’s, and Hendricksons to join the already early stoneflies and chimara caddis that have been hatching in water too cold to get the fish really all to excited. It’s a new game now.

Check out the balminess forecast to waft in by the weekend. Early stoneflies are out in force, could some early season caddis and mayflies be far behind. Water levels are too high to wade on the West Branch and Main Stem, but the East Branch, Beaverkill, and Willowemoc should be in the game. Check the flow levels on our website to be sure no errant downpour jumped the levels up. We’re open full time for the season, 7 days a week, starting this Friday.

We’re on our way home from hosting our annual trip to Patagonia, and as always the trip was outstanding. Great fly fishing with great people at one of the last great places on the planet. A prime example of the world that a fly rod can unlock for you. Plans are underway for our 2027 return.

After a long dry spell, the reservoirs that feed the river system are back in the normal storage levels. Water temps are in the mid 30’s pretty much throughout the system. Hang in there, May will come, but for now we also have early season April fishing to look forward to.
