Our guiding and hunting season begins in September out in SD, then in early October I return to Little Moran for our ruffed grouse and woodcock, I am a lucky man!
This past fall I turned sixty-seven and still love to get up and go to work. But in quoting the late Toby Keith; I ain’t as good as I once was, but I’m as good once as I ever was.” This is starting to ring true. However, without two new hips and 1 new knee I would be hurtin’.
I chuckle at the younger guys while out on the prairie, when a dog goes on point a couple hundred yards out there, they look at me like…should we wait for you? I tell em, “Get up there to the dogs, I’ll catch up”, and I do…. with my camera clicking away.
I feel old at times when I can see the truck a mile or more away on the prairie, where each step gets longer and then in the grouse woods each deadfall gets taller and the cover thicker. Yet, life is good!
Like a safe plane landing, we made it through another hunting season in both SD and MN without incidents. A huge thank you goes out to Mark and Al for doing a good job guiding and pitching in when needed. It is always nice to hear how much our guys enjoy your company and how well your dogs did, it makes me proud and happy, our guys are already looking forward to this coming fall.
The highlights continue to be all our hunters, who have with us many years and are now family. What is so rewarding is when our returning guests bring their friends and family, sharing all the wonderful parts of the hunt. It is not all about shooting birds, but the whole experience.
To our “hunting family” here on FB your friendship, hunting ethics and reverence for the sport is what brings me back, because when that is gone or lost, it will be my time to give my guns to the grandkids.
