Summer basketball continued today with two varsity games at Heyworth this afternoon. The Spartans ended on the wrong side of the scoreboard in both games but showed some fight in their double header today. The first game, against Heyworth, a 47-40 loss, was a rollercoaster game. The Spartans facing a tough press defense and physical half court play struggled to handle the ball early. We trailed 35-13 at the break. In the second half our group of Spartans answered the challenge and played smarter and more physical resulting in a second half score of 27-12 in our favor. We just dug too big of a hole in the first half but the fight from the guys was great. Will Langley led the charge in the second half with several great mid range looks and good finishes at the rim.

In the second game of the double header the Spartans dropped 39-29 to Cerro Gordo. The Spartans took a 27-23 lead with 8 minutes to play before missing some good looks and going on the wrong side of a 16-2 run. The second game was a defensive battle and the Spartans were led by Blake Pichon who had several good defensive plays.

The kids played hard today and stepped up in different roles with various activities going on today! Always a good day to be in the gym and we look forward to our next game Thursday night against CLA

Summer Basketball is underway! The Spartans kicked off summer basketball with a double header on Tuesday at Olympia. Winning game 1 48-43 over Lexington and dropping game two to Peoria Notre Dame 48-38. The JV Spartans started their summer with two tight games. A mid afternoon 36-35 loss to Peoria Notre Dame and an evening tilt against Heyworth falling 39-37. The boys have worked hard on the defensive end of the floor this summer.

The Spartans continued their efforts on Wednesday with two good performances at Havana. Winning both games at the varsity level. 61-50 over South County and 38-32 over Havana. Highlights will be posted of the games later!

Players of the game:
Game 1: Blake Pichon - against Lexington. Pichon hit a late 3 pointer to put the game away.
Game 2: Ty Olson - against PND. Olson, led the way defensively helping the Spartans keep the game close with steals, blocks, and several key rebounds.
Game 3: Ty Gale - against South County. Gale lit up the scoreboard with several 3s and some good takes to the basket!
Game 4: Luke Prestegaard - against Havana. Prestegaard iced the game with a tough midrange shot in the final minute.

The Spartans will be back in action next week.
Varsity (3-1) at Heyworth on Tuesday 3 and 4 pm
JV (0-2) at El-Paso rec center 5:15 and 6:15 pm

What an amazing week of basketball. We had a great turnout this week for our youth camps. The kids were fantastic all week and brought the energy as they worked on their skills. A big thanks to our high school players for being there all week to help these future Spartans have a great week. Here are some pictures of our campers of the day throughout the week and some photos of campers who won events! We look forward to watching them all this fall in their seasons! Go Spartans!

Thank you to all of the participants for making our 2nd Annual March Mania 3x3 Tournament a great success! We hosted 36 teams and almost 150 players throughout the day!

We want to congratulate senior Dylan Nowaskie on finishing his career 3rd all-time in points scored in program history!

Other notable additions to the archives are junior Cael Halley (single season field goal % & single season rebounding), junior Luke Prestegaard (single season 3 pointers made), and junior Brendon Hardimon (single season assists & assist to turnover ratio).

The Spartans (7-23) end the season with a 63-43 loss to a very talented Canton team. The Spartans forced some missed shots early, got to the free throw line, and competed on the glass to go into halftime down 26-24.

To start the second half we got some great looks at the basket but couldn’t capitalize on our opportunity and went nearly 5:00 minutes without scoring. Canton scored 13 straight points in that stretch. The Spartans were led in scoring tonight by Dylan Nowaskie with 15, Ben Tackett with 10 (8/8 FT) and Luke Prestegaard 10. Cael Halley worked hard on the glass tonight coming away with 10 rebounds.

We can’t thank our seniors enough for their hard work and dedication. We wish them all the best in their future endeavors! We’re looking forward to getting to work this offseason with our returning players and continuing to improve.

It’s gameday Spartans! Tonight the boys begin regional play in Canton against the Little Giants (16-14). Reminder that the game is being played at Alice Ingersoll Gymnasium, not at the high school. The game starts at 6pm. Hope to see you there!

The Spartans (7-22, 3-6) fall to Sangamo Conference Champion PORTA at home 66-44. The Spartans started the game with great defensive effort, trailing 11-7 at the end of the first quarter. We gave the Blue Jays several free-throw opportunities in the second quarter, and trailed 29-17 at halftime. The Spartans then struggled out of the break, giving PORTA a 12-0 run in the 3rd quarter. Our kids battled all night but struggled to make shots against a good defensive unit.

We want to thank our Seniors: Ben Tackett, Kolin Simpson, Dylan Nowaskie, Gabe Demling, and Austin Rebbe for their commitment to our program. They have grown as basketball players and, more importantly, as good young men. We look forward to seeing them continue to achieve great things as they lead their lives.

Leading scorers tonight were Dylan Nowaskie with 18 points and Brendon Hardimon with 10 points. We are in Canton on Monday night to face Canton for our first game of our regional. Game time is 6 pm at Alice Ingersoll Gymnasium.
