GETTING TO KNOW COACH NINO
•
Hi guys well my name is Alvaro Nino De Guzman, I go by Coach Nino or Coach Alvaro whichever you prefer. I was born in Cochabamba, Bolivia, and moved to the USA in 2000. I have been a resident of Stafford county since 2005, graduating from North Stafford HS in 2014.

Whether it was playing in the backyard or with my older brothers and their teammates, I have been around soccer forever. I played for Stafford Soccer on Rec, Classic and then later their travel team. I was fortunate enough to make the team, but due to financial difficulties my season was cut short.

My freshman year of HS, I tried out for the school team, but was cut. I was told I wasn’t in shape, that became my drive and motivation to train in the summer, and get in shape for the following year. Thanks to the off-season conditioning we did, I was able to get in shape and better my health. (There were a lot sprints/runs involved!!)
[Advice: Never quit on a goal or dream you have set for yourself]
Sophomore year I made JV and even moved up to Varsity at the end of the season. Both Junior and Senior year I was on Varsity, as well.

I studied at NOVA community college for a year. The following year, I decided to go to Ferrum College to pursue my dream of being the first person in my family, to go away to a 4 year college. All my soccer buddies being there, was an added bonus! I was a walk-on for Ferrum’s collegiate soccer team and made it.
After completing a year at Ferrum, financial difficulties arose again and forced me to return home. After returning, I graduated from NOVA with an Associates degree in General Studies.

In 2023, I just completed my 2nd year coaching the men’s soccer team at North Stafford Hs and can’t wait to return for the upcoming season. I am pursuing a career in coaching, currently with my 1v1 training program, HS team, and hopefully an elite level team in the future.
