Stop Renting Your Business. Start Owning It.
One of the biggest mistakes I see new specimen collectors make is depending only on TPAs for work. Don't get me wrong, they have their place. TPAs can help you get experience and fill gaps in your schedule. But if you're building a business for freedom, they should be one piece of your strategy not your entire strategy.
Here's why building your own client base changes everything:
1. More Money – You set your rates instead of accepting whatever someone else is willing to pay.
2. Strong Relationships – Direct clients know you, trust you, and keep calling you. That leads to repeat business, referrals, and long-term contracts.
3. Unlimited Growth – One employer can turn into pre-employment testing, randoms, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, return-to-duty, follow-up testing, breath alcohol testing, DNA testing, background checks, and much more.
4. Freedom of Your Time & Schedule – You decide when you work, who you work with, and what jobs you accept. You're building a business around your life not your life around someone else's schedule.
5. Become a Problem Solver – The companies that make the most money aren't just selling collections—they're solving business problems. Help employers reduce downtime, simplify compliance, improve hiring, provide after-hours service, or bring testing directly to their location. The bigger the problem you solve, the more valuable you become.
6. Build a Business You Actually Own – If one TPA stops calling, your income takes a hit. But when you have your own clients, your business has stability, leverage, and real value. You're creating an asset that can grow, expand, be licensed, franchised, or even sold one day.
Use TPAs to gain experience. Use direct clients to build wealth. There's a big difference between getting jobs and owning a business. Which one are you building?
