What US โ€œworking memoryโ€? Working memory is the temporary storage of information in the brain in order to complete task. This is different from long-term memory, because it means juggling bits of information for short periods of times instead of trying to store it for years to come. This is one of the critical executive functioning skills necessary for success. Those with stronger working memory abilities can more easily remember directions, complete multi-step activities & work through challenging problems.

Think of working memory as though it were a mental sketch pad, a place to store information for short periods of time while weโ€™re working through a task. Kids, teens & adults use this skill on a daily basis to completely basic & complex tasks.

For students, these tasks range from completing simple mental math in our heads while completing a math activity to following multi-step directions to finish a project.

Dolly Parton's Imagination Library is dedicated to inspiring a love of reading by gifting books free of charge to children from birth to age five, through funding shared by Dolly Parton and local community partners in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia and Republic of Ireland.

Inspired by her fatherโ€™s inability to read and write, Dolly started her Imagination Library in 1995 for the children within her home county. Today, her program spans five countries and gifts millions of FREE books each month to children around the world.

Thanks to Georgia Ryan - Dyslexic Warrior for another important post!

It takes 4 times longer to intervene in 4th grade than it does in 1st grade.

The longer we wait to identify a child who struggles to read, the more intervention, the more time, money & remediation will be needed, not to mention the impact that waiting may have on the childโ€™s self-esteem & mental health.

Donโ€™t wait. Close the gapโ€”now.

Thanks to Disability Rights Arkansas for this informative post about Miss Dolly!

Did you know that Dolly Parton's Imagination Library did more than just provide books to kids? Anyone who registers their child to be a recipient of DPIL will receive a developmentally appropriate book each month.

To make it even better, DPIL has partnered with the American Printing House for the Blind since 2011 to make books accessible for kids with visual impairments through braille and audiobooks.

The world will mourn Dolly for a long time, but the disability community celebrates her. Dolly, thank you for making literacy and education more accessible for children with disabilities, especially those who live in rural areas. Your work will never cease!

Very Helpful Dyslexia Resources Are Included with This Postโ€”Many Are FREE, too!

Thanks to Dyslexia Inspired for this great post!

A portion of schools and staff have felt knowing about learning differences was optional for many years.

Now the Neurodiversity Rights movement is showing society that every child matters.

Every educator can now easily find millions of resources on the Internet to learn more far beyond college and work training.

Cox Campus offers free training. Accredited. Unlimited access. Over 1000 free courses. Paid for by generous donations so no educator needs to tell families they are waiting for work training or funding. FREE.

Doesnโ€™t every child deserve the lifetime benefit of literacy and numeracy so they can get jobs like the teachers when they grow up?

Wonderful changes are now occurring to help all school staff better understand learning differences.

11. Now it is very easy to learn . YouTubeโ€™s. Podcasts. Audio books. Journals. Education websites. Millions of FREE resources and supports exist.

Teachers must be role models for the children by showing they know how to learn more too. All educators must have the skill and will to do their own lifelong learning.

https://www.simplek12.com/blog/keep-learning-as-teacher

The colleges of education should offer free training to any educator who felt they did not learn enough in teacher prep.

The Reading League and IDA have set up guidelines to improve teacher prep for the next generation.

https://compass.thereadingleague.org/paths/educator-preparation-programs/

12. The colleges of education should help future teachers understand they will be required to have a mindset of lifelong learning far beyond paid work training.

It's about having the self-motivation to be willing to put in a sustained effort to learn.

This post begins with the premise that high quality teachers are lifelong learners. This assumption is based on the recognition that teaching is a complex profession with changing and growing demands.

In order to meet the demands, all school staff must have lifelong learning skills. All licensed professionals require continuing education skills.

13. A portion of teachers do not know how to teach literacy and numeracy. A portion of teachers do not know about learning differencesโ€ฆyet.

Kindly join as many professional groups as you can to stay informed.

In a profession built on growth, educators cannot afford to stand still.

Continuous learning strengthens teaching practice and ensures students receive education that is relevant, inclusive, and impactful.

Continuous learning is not an optional add-on for teachers, it is a core professional responsibility.

Licensure standards of accountability should be required.

Dolly Parton was a great lover of literacy for all!
She believed in supported literacy so much that she provided books for children from birth to Kindergartenโ€”at no charge to their parents who signed up for her program. Dolly Parton's Imagination Library is another testament to Ms. Partonโ€™s love of reading, too!

Thank you, Dolly!
